Touch the Sound (DVD)
$16.77 In RIVERS AND TIDES, German documentarian Thomas Riedelsheimer explored the enchanting and hypnotic "nature" art-installations of Andy Goldsworthy. Now, with TOUCH THE SOUND, he turns his camera on nearly deaf percussionist Evelyn Glennie, who experiences sound as a kind of touching or vibration. Using Glennie`s unique musical sensibilities as a jumping-off point, Riedelsheimer introduces the viewer to an amazing sonic realm that we all know but rarely appreciate--a world of tapping, sputtering, clanging, rustling rhythms. The drone of a suitcase`s wheels on concrete interrupted by the periodic zing of a zipper, the crackling of an icy pond, the echoic clang of metal scaffolding struck by Glennie`s shoe--these sounds become, in Riedelsheimer`s skilled hands, moments of revelation. Watching this film, viewers will feel like they are hearing the world for the first time. |

Touch and Go (DVD)
$14.23 Action director Ringo Lam, who had previously directed comedies but had since infused the action genre with real drama and social concerns with CITY ON FIRE, returned halfway with TOUCH AND GO. There's a lot of action, but it is all done with tongue planted firmly in cheek. The star, Sammo Hung, a very popular actor in such Hong Kong kung fu films as DRAGONS FOREVER, plays Fat Goose, a noodle stall worker who has the misfortune of witnessing a Mafia murder. He is convinced by the police to do his civic duty and testify in court against a known Triad member. The police promise to protect him from mob reprisals but fail to do so, and he is left to defend himself. Hung, who stages and choreographs his own fight scenes, has a deft comic touch that includes a lot of silly gags along with the violence. The resulting style is more like a Jackie Chan film, in which realism is often jettisoned in favor of entertainment. The plot, which could be a serious indictment of the incompetence and corruption of the Royal Hong Kong Police, is played for laughs instead. After this effort, which is very much a Sammo Hung film, Lam returned to his own brand of stylized realism in his portrayal of crime and violence with the hit FULL CONTACT.DVD Features:Region 0Keep CaseLetterboxedAudio: Stereo - Cantonese Stereo - MandarinAdditional Release Material: TrailersInteractive Features: Scene Access Interactive Menus |

That Touch of Mink (DVD)
$9.15 Of Doris Day, comedian-pianist Oscar Levant once observed, I knew her before she was a virgin. Indeed, playing a woman who always says no proved quite profitable for the wholesome singer in a series of light comedies in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Here in THAT TOUCH OF MINK, she plays newly unemployed New York secretary Cathy Timberlake, who meets handsome and wealthy business magnate Philip Shayne (Cary Grant) when his car accidentally splatters her dress with mud. Her annoyance about her dress is vaporized by his charm, and she agrees to join him on a business trip to Baltimore. There they attend a baseball game which features amusing appearances by diamond greats Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, and Yogi Berra. They stop for drinks en route to New York, where Philip impresses the young woman by giving a speech at the United Nations. Feeling that he's finally gotten past the necessary preliminaries, he asks Cathy to accompany him to Bermuda, where clearly, he hopes the relationship will reach a new plateau. If one can accept the film's outdated premise, there are some truly amusing moments in this featherweight farce.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseSingle Side - Single LayerWidescreen - 1.85Audio: Dolby Digital Mono - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Trailer - 1. Touch of Pink (DVD)
$10.32 Jimi Mistry (THE GURU, EAST IS EAST) stars in this charming and surprisingly poignant romantic comedy, which is driven by the humor that infuses the multifaceted cultural divide between the young and old, Indian and Western, gay and straight--not to mention real and imaginary, alive and dead--characters. Alim is a young South Indian movie photographer living in London after relocating there from Canada. He lives with his boyfriend Giles (Kristen Holden-Reid), as well as the ghost of Cary Grant (Kyle MacLachlan), whom only Alim can see. Pursuing the ideal world presented in the films of Grant-era Hollywood, Alim seeks and then follows the advice of the ghost. This works out pretty well until his mother Nuru decides to come for a visit. She is a conservative Indian mother who is concerned at Alim's bachelorhood, especially in light of her nephew's impending wedding and the friendly sibling rivalry she shares with his mother. Madcap confusion ensues as Alim tries to keep Giles' true identity and his own, from being discovered by his mother, all the while trying to maintain composure in the style of his mentor.DVD Features:Region (unknown)Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 1.85Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - English Subtitles - English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean, Thai - OptionalAdditional Release Material: Audio Commentary - 1.
