How do I get such good audio in Hollywood movies / TV?
I've been wondering how can I watch all these great films and television programs, How do they get such amazing audio to humans? It does not appear to have a microphone strapped to them, and sometimes I cannot see how they get there shotgun microphone, but every sound is still crystal-clear voice in the next, no matter how far this person. Any guesses?
Filmmakers a lot of methods they use to access the audio controls. The first scene is shot in a room on the soundstage. This gives them the highest level of control. Sets can be constructed to resemble the soundstage on the outside, and Chromakey, all films (Sin City, 300) may be a shot in the soundstage. The walls are marked off to prevent echoes and boom microphones are kept close to the actors, but only within the shot. Little wild sound is not recorded in this case. If necessary, the outside shot, one of the elements that are needed to control the wind. Sometimes even a slight breeze can destroy Audio recorded on set. To counter this microphone is enclosed in a shell, then covered with the glass covering the Furry. Then, the sound engineer hits the soundtrack and try to clean it by isolating and eliminating any of the wild sounds he encounters on the track. If soundtrack can not be cleaned, sometimes becomes the entities back into additional dialogue recording, or ADR. The actors go the studio recordings, where the film and watch the dub over the dialogue scenes. With the ADR, Foley recording it. Here Foley artists performing sound effects (footsteps, opening doors), which is needed for the scenes in the recording studio, because watching the film. Sound editor also has a library capable of sound (explosions, tires screeching, gunfire and ricochets), that can be mixed into the audio track.

Steven Bernstein - Diaspora Hollywood *
$15.98 Composer: Josef Rosenblatt.Personnel: Steven Bernstein (trumpet, flugelhorn); Steven Bernstein ; Dick Akright (trumpet); David Piltch (double bass); Pablo Calogero (flute, bass flute, bass clarinet, baritone saxophone); D.J. Bonebrake (vibraphone); Danny Frankel (drums, bongos, percussion).Audio Mixer: Danny Kopelson.Liner Note Author: Steven Bernstein .Recording information: Solidstatesman Studio, Hollywood, CA (02/12/2004-02/20/2004).Photographer: Peter Gannushkin.Arrangers: Steven Bernstein ; Henry Rosenblatt.Steven Bernstein`s Diaspora series continues with Diaspora Hollywood, inspired by the great film composers who immigrated from Eastern Europe to New York and then to Hollywood, and also by the sound of cool West Coast jazz. Diaspora Hollywood has a great sound, like some kind of Jewish jazz noir with its rich, moody tones and haunting vibraphone. Pablo Calogero`s woodwinds and flute mostly inhabit the low end, with delicious baritone sax, bass clarinet, and bass flute. Bernstein`s playing will sound reserved to Sex Mob fans in comparison, but he`s going for a very different mood here and his playing is exquisite. The songs are anchored by David Piltch`s woody bass and the tasty and understated percussion of Danny Frankel with D.J. Bonebrake`s vibes hanging in the air, adding cool colors throughout. It`s a mostly laid-back affair that doesn`t so much build in energy as it does in mood, totally immersing the listener by the end. Lovely. ~ Sean Westergaard Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Ella Fitzgerald - Ella in Hollywood
$49.87 Personnel: Herb Ellis (guitar); Paul "Scooby" Smith, Lou Levy (piano); Gus Johnson, Stan Levey (drums).Audio Mixer: Val Valentin.Liner Note Authors: Harry Weinger; Richard Seidel.Recording information: The Crescendo (05/11/1961-06/30/1962).Photographers: Rolf Ambor; Riccardo Schwamenthal; Chuck Stewart; Chuck Stewart. An appearance in Hollywood for a first-rate jazz vocalist was not necessarily an opportunity to broadcast your visage and pander to everyone from Tacoma to Tallahassee. It could also include a date at the Crescendo, the Sunset Strip`s best chance to find premier jazz. Gene Norman`s nightclub hosted dozens of jazz legends (and a comic or two), and produced more than its share of excellent LPs recorded on location. Better even than Mel Torm¿`s 1954 classic, the Ella Fitzgerald LP that resulted from her May 1961 appearances generated one of the best (and certainly most underrated) live records in her discography -- and almost 50 years later, it became a four-CD set compiling ten days` worth of performances. All of her hallmarks (technical wizardry, breakneck scatting, irrepressible humor and warmth) are on full display, with a small but expressive quartet backing her performance, including pianist Lou Levy, guitarist Herb Ellis, drummer Gus Johnson, and bassist Wilfred Middlebrooks. Although it`s full of brilliance, the highlights are clear: a seven-minute scat masterpiece of "Take the `A` Train," with chorus after chorus of variations, and the shorter but still excellent "Mr. Paganini." The balladry is masterful as well, with "Baby, Won`t You Please Come Home" high on the list. Verve label-head Norman Granz recorded each of Ella Fitzgerald`s sets between May 11th and 21st, 1961, at the Crescendo, and Twelve Nights in Hollywood contains the fruits of that labor -- 75 songs with nary a repeat in the list (although the fourth disc actually consists of a 1962 date finding Fitzgerald back at the Crescendo). Although its comprehensiveness may be a hindrance, Twelve Nights in Hollywood is a classic glimpse of Ella at her on-stage best. ~ John Bush Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Hollywood
$52.77 The Hollywood that greeted Cendrars in 1936 was in its heydey. Cendrars was often snubbed by studio guards and the stars and industry movers and shakers with whom he was trying to hobnob. His response was to invent a wildly funny Hollywood of his own, embellishing his adventures and mixing them with black humor, star anecdotes, and wry social commentary. |

On Hollywood
$52 On Hollywood offers a lively and highly informative history of the origins and early growth of the Hollywood motion picture industry. Scott shows us the rich tapestry of personalities who created the Hollywood system. At the same time, he forcefully and effectively argues that it was self-interested intransigence and the lack of entrepreneurial vision within the New York based film industry that caused New York to squander its early dominant position. The rest, as they say, is history. --Robert DeFillippi, Suffolk University |

The group specialized in a kind of informed update of the classic electric blues bands of the 1950s, but were also capable of eerily accurate acoustic versions of old country blues standards from the 1920s or shifting into New Orleans piano romps, keeping traditions alive while giving them a sonic push forward at the same time. Mann`s death in 1986 brought the band to a close until 2005 when the original members reunited as the Hollywood Blue Flames, this time with guitarist Kirk Fletcher aboard, and continued making vital blues music in the same vein as the original group. Deep in America is the band`s third album released under the Hollywood Blue Flames name, and while it would be wrong to say that Mann isn`t missed, Fletcher plays on these tracks like the only feasible substitute. It works, and it works for the same reason the Hollywood Fats Band worked -- passion and intelligence. These guys know the history of the blues but they seem to understand the genre`s emotional center as well, with tracks like the perfectly and wearily poised "Leavin` California," and they also don`t forget that people need to step it up and dance -- check out the easily rolling piano shuffles "Crescent City Rock" and "Hushpuppy" for proof of that. A second disc is included in this package that features vintage live cuts from the original Hollywood Fats Band -- so in a way, Mann is aboard here, too. ~ Steve Leggett Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. $14.34 Audio Mixer: Joe Bellamy.Liner Note Author: Miriam Hospodar.Recording information: Peace In The Valley, Arleta, CA (1979); The Belly Up Tavern, Solana Beach, CA (1979); The Keyston, Palo Alto, CA (1979); The White House, Laguna Beach, CA (1979); Peace In The Valley, Arleta, CA (1980); The Belly Up Tavern, Solana Beach, CA (1980); The Keyston, Palo Alto, CA (1980); The White House, Laguna Beach, CA (1980); Peace In The Valley, Arleta, CA (2004-2009); The Belly Up Tavern, Solana Beach, CA (2004-2009); The Keyston, Palo Alto, CA (2004-2009); The White House, Laguna Beach, CA (2004-2009).Photographer: Joshua Temkin.A tasteful and elegantly modern blues band with jazzy overtones, the Hollywood Flames came together in 1975 on the West Coast as the Hollywood Fats Band, led by guitar phenom Michael "Hollywood Fats" Mann and featuring Larry Taylor on bass and drums, Richard Innes on piano and Hammond B-3, Fred Kaplan on piano and guitar, and harmonica whiz and vocalist Al Blake. 2005. Hollywood
$14.03 In 1920, Joseph W. Young Jr. came to Florida and created Hollywood, an entire city based on City Beautiful ideals. Today, though his city has greatly increased in size, Youngas original plan and many handsome 1920s buildings still demonstrate Hollywoodas historic beginnings, a tribute to Youngas vision. |

$11.24 Wicked and provocative...Vidal's purview of Hollywood in one of its golden ages is fascinating. -- Chicago Tribune In his brilliant and dazzling new novel, Gore Vidal sweeps us into one of the most fascinating periods of American political and social change. The time is 1917. In Washington, President Wilson is about to lead the United States into the Great War. In California, a new industry is born that will transform America: moving pictures. Here is history as only Gore Vidal can re-create it: brimming with intrigue and scandal, peopled by the greats of the silver screen and American politics, from Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks to Franklin D. Roosevelt and the author's own grandfather, the blind Senator Gore. With Hollywood, Vidal once again proves himself a superb storyteller and a perceptive chronicler of human nature's endless deceptions. From the Paperback edition. |
